hide and seek

The to-and-fro of comments and the community that grows up around us is one of the things that makes this blogging game so rewarding, I'm sure you'll agree. It's fun to make connections and get to know one another a little, and it's always good to be able to support new blogs and contribute to discussions.

I know that many of you choose not to get involved, preferring just to read what's on offer, and I have no problem with that at all. Quite often I'll do the same.

BUT! If you do comment, and I love it when you do, I like to be able to reply to you, and my preferred way of doing so is simply to click 'reply' to your message. It's quick, and more personal than making a general reply in the comments myself, although I sometimes like to do that too.

However, it's often not that easy to get back to you, and depending on your account settings, it can be downright impossible. Unless you set up your profile to allow access to your email, Blogger will default to the ubiquitous 'noreply-comment@blogger.com', which can make things hard work. If you don't have an email link on your profile page either, you're in danger of giving the Scarlet Pimpernel a run for his money.

I don't often give up without a fight and I'll usually get hold of you somehow to say 'hello and thank you', but let's make it easy. If you haven't done it yet, here's how:

Go to your Dashboard and click 'Edit your Profile'. Scroll down a bit to 'Identity' and fill in the box marked 'Email Address'. This means I can now reply directly to your comment. Hurray! Now, if you'd like to, add your email to your Profile Page. This means I can get in contact with you if I stumble across your blog one day. To do this, tick the box marked 'Show my Email Address' in the 'Privacy' tab. Finally, don't forget to save your changes!

If you don't fancy everyone knowing your email address - and why should you - it's easy and free to set up a separate email account with Google or whoever, and then just get everything forwarded to your main one so you don't have to keep logging on and checking it.

So if you've been feeling like billy-no-mates and wondering why nobody's getting in touch, check your account settings!

How on earth do you illustrate a post about blog settings? Why, with photos of last summer's holiday, of course. See more on Flickr.

Hello Sue, I couldn't agree more - it's an endless source of frustration when you can't respond to a comment someone's left...and there isn't always the time to track people down, either. Love the calligraphy - anything with pens and ink and paper inspires me. And my little corner cutter - lots of fun to be had with that!
Happy days,
Diana x

Sue, I couldn’t agree more…..I disapprove of having to leave messages in ‘comments’ unless of course it is a comment…..I can’t understand why so many people don’t have an email link. As I don’t get many comments I like to respond to each one if I can.
My email is on my profile page but I’d better go check those settings……………

Hi Sue, thanks for your tips. I've done as you've suggested. Easy peasy.

Yay!
I'm so glad you explained all that. I don't think I am a no-reply person but quite a few of my commenters are. Perhaps you can let me know.
I will just have to link to this post here.

Responding to your post, I check your blog regularly as it's one of my favourites but rarely leave a comment. However, your post feels like a challenge so here it is, my comment. I love your photographs and am also a pen and paper addict...can only admire your needlework as it's all beyond me but I like to see your ideas. Thank you.

I quite agree Sue... would you mind if I put a similar message on my blog...Its so hard to find people and to be honest when you are up to your eyes in it like I am at the moment ...you havent the time or dont get round to going on blogs and leaving comments on posts especially if you want to ay something personal..hurray for you! love and hugs H

I am so glad you posted this. I'm going to link to it on my blog post tomorrow. I've been meaning to look into this. I hate when I get those comments that have noreply in the email addy and I have to go searching. I wasn't sure why they were that way.Thank you for addressing this. Love your blog.

Now I understand why sometimes if I hit reply to a comment on my blog the message doesn't go through.[I thought it was something I'd done wrong.]

Thanks for the tops - I have set mine up as you suggested.

And thanks to Dogdaisychains for sending me over here.

Thank you so much for that - and to Jackie for pointing me in your direction. There's so much about Blogger that I still don't understand! I'll be back to look at your blog properly when I've sorted mine out. Love what I've seen so far!

Hello Sue, I have just 'found' you via Gilly who found me and left a comment on my blog and thus this led me to check her blog, and leave a comment - and there was one from you and I checked in an lo and behold, you are connected with rare books - perhaps in Manchester?

That aside, you will now have me rushing back to my blog and checking my profile, though I feel sure my email is given. If it isn't, I will update! (Love the calligraphy post, takes me back to GCE art (1954).

Hi! I'm pretty new at this but I just got 4 comments on my blog and they gave you the credit somehow, by following your blog. It was so exciting to get some comments! I love finding out where they are from, their profiles, etc. I can't get over the common interests across the world. I appreciate your practical tips, too, and I am going to improve my profile now =)

Good advice - I've changed my profile so my email address appears now (it was in identity already). However does this lead to more spam i wonder?

Thank you for this great advice, which I discovered through a link at Lesley's beautiful website, The Bower. I only realise now as I'm typing this how long ago you wrote the post! But it's still valuable! :-)
