a little crochet moment

It's been a while since we had a crochet moment on here, hasn't it? I think the last time was when I finished my odds-and-ends blanket back in May, but be assured that my hook has not been idle and here is the result: a lovely soft warm scarf in the baby-soft cashmerino that I bought in the summer.

It's such a beautiful colour and just right for autumn. The stitch is very simple and if anybody is interested, the details are below.

Five balls of Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino in shade 025 using a 5mm hook using treble stitch which is double in US crochet lingo (I think).
One shell = 2 tr, 1 ch, 2 tr.

Chain any multiple of 5 stitches, plus 4 extra (I did 44).

Row 1: 1 tr, 1 ch, 2 tr into 4th ch from hook, sk 4 ch, *shell into next ch, sk 4 ch, repeat from * to last ch then 2 tr, 1 ch, 1 tr in last ch, ch 3, turn.

Row 2: 1 tr, 1 ch, 2 tr in first ch space, shell in each ch space to end, 2 tr, 1 ch, 1 tr in last ch space, ch 3, turn.

Repeat row 2 until scarf is desired length.
NB I have edited this to correct the previous instruction which Jacqui kindly pointed out was wrong. I originally wrote 'repeat row 1'. This wouldn't have made sense anyway, so hopefully nobody's scarf has got in a twist. But it's right now (19.11.2012)

Easy!

This is lovely. I am only just learning to crochet, but I am going to give this a try. Scary prospect, but your scarf looks fabulous and you've inspired me, and I can, at least, already hook a treble! Thank you for sharing :D

Sue said...

Annie - if you can hook a treble you can make this scarf! No question. Go for it :-)

Wow sue, your scarf looks wonderful........♥ the colour. Shame it doesn't have a lovely name rather than a number.
Would love to have a go at the pattern, but there's a blanket that needs finishing first....

I have been thinking about a scalf & this looks perfect. Great colour too. You make such beautiful stuff I am so glad that your painting hasn't stopped you crocheting.X

Love the color. Think I'll give it a try too.

Sue, that stitch pattern you chose is perfect for that soft yarn that has such a great hand. The result is just enough lace, just enough structure...that equals a great looking and feeling scarf.

I'm currently moving from project to project, and now think you've helped me to add another to the assortment.

What a lovely colour in my favourite green tonality!! And a beautiful scarf! Maybe one day I'll take the hook and learn to stitch. But for now I can only knit (to be honest I haven't done it for ages!!). These days I've been sewing puppets together with my husband for our new performance. So... I have at least a big needle in hands.:0)
Have a golden autumn weekend, Sue!

That is SO pretty! I'd have a go but I made one I wear a lot last year!

The colour suits you so well, too.

Beautiful! I've been looking for a scarf that's easy enough for a relative beginner but would teach me something different. This fits the bill nicely -- thank you so much!

Do you happen to remember roughly how long it took you to finish? I'm terrible at guesstimating that. Of course I'll be slower than you, but every bit of data helps. :)

Sue said...

Hi Suzana, I'm sorry I don't remember how long the scarf took me, but I guess it would depend on how fast you crochet and how often you're able to sit down and do a little bit. Good luck with your projects!

Hi Sue
Just s quick question - in your instructions you give details for Row 1 and Row 2 and then say repeat Row 1 until scarf is desired length.
I showed this pattern to a friend of mine who can crochet and she asked if you only had to repeat Row 1 and not both Row 1 & Row 2?

Sorted now Jacqui, thanks for pointing it out.

absolutely love this pattern. I have 3 little girls wanting a scarf and this pattern is prefect, it's so quick and easy. Basically I cut the pattern in half, used a 6.00 needle, and super bulky (6) yarn. They are turning out beautiful. Thank you

I love it!

Trouble is I'm just starting to learn how to crochet, did a few amiguri's but this is challenging for me. Do you make the first treble in the first chain from hook and then how do you count the 4th chain from hook after that chain, because there's that treble between it...
Sorry for all these questions but I think that once I get over the first few steps I could do it!

Unknown said...

Inge - count 4 chains from the hook and then complete the treble. This is similar to when you chain an extra 1-3 stitches to accomodate the height of your stitch on the next row.

Sue said...

Yes, just as Sandie says, Inge! Good luck!

This pattern is UK pattern, not US. Just thought I'd let you know.

Sue said...

Thank you for pointing that out, Anonymous. Yes, it's UK treble which is US double.

Which chain spaces are the shells made? The ones between the shells, or the ch1 in the middle of the shell?

Anonymous said...

Anyone can count the minutes for a skein or ball...if crocheting for some time multiplying amounts of yarn using!

JD said...

What is a good length? Mine is about 10" wide and about 38" long right now.

Sounds good to me!

Can you suggest another brand of yarn and what is the yarn weight?
Thanks

Sue said...

Sorry, I am not a great expert on yarns, but this was DK, so any similar weight would work. Thanks!

Donna W said...

Can you tell me what the ch1 means in the shell?

Sue said...

Hi Donna! It means chain one stitch. Good luck!

Thank you for getting back with me so quick. I am a new at crocheting.

Sue said...

Good luck! You'll soon get the hang of it and then you'll be addicted :-)

Hi Sue,
I'm making this in alpaca 8ply produced by a local supplier near where I live. I'm doing this for my sister in law who lives in Ottawa Canada. I'm so excited.

Silly question...do the 4 chains skipped and the chain 1 in the shell stitch count as a chain space? Picture looks like. Just between the shell ch 1. I'm confused

Sue said...

So sorry but I’m not sure I understand the question! My best advice is to have a little trial and see if it works/makes sense.

Gorgeous. This came out beautifully.nthank you

Looks easy enough, but still really pretty. UK terminology is a step above US. So a UK treble is US double. A UK double is US single.

Hello Sue, I love your lace scarf that is so beautiful. I tried to follow your pattern instructions that I could understand tr(double crochet). 2tr, 1 chain, 2 tr = shell. I did crochet 44 stitches. I was confused that I have 7 shells and 1tr, 1 ch, 2 tr (on the left) and 2tr, 1 chain, 1 tr (on the right). I stopped after 6 rows and looked like that they do not match like yours. Pretty curves on the each side on your scarf that I tried to follow yours. I think I am messed up and confused.

How can I send a picture to you? So, you can see it if I make mistakes on the end sides.

Thank you, Susan

Susan said...

I think I found my mistakes that I added a TR after tr , 1 chain, 2 tr on the left side and right side. I read the instructions again and I finally found that I should not to do one TR extra on the ends on both sides. I have to pull out the 6 rows back to the start. Yuck!!

Hi. Lovely scarf and I can't wait to make it. Already working on next years Christmas gifts. Thanks so much for explaining that "tr" means "dc" (double crochet) in the USA. Hope "sk" means skip stitch because that is what I thought it meant.

It's brilliant! I'm definitely gonna make one for myself, I never make anything for ME.
Thanx a bunch for sharing luv. ❤

Hi - Just came across this pattern. Looks so pretty. I have a question. When you start row 2 after you chain 3, where is the (Row 2: 1 tr, 1 ch, 2 tr in first ch space,) first ch space? Is that between the shell stitch or 7 stitches in above the large chain 1 space? Thank you

I would love to know also.
