art holiday

This week my sons have gone on holiday with their dad and I am free of family responsibilities for five days, so I decided to book time off work and have an art holiday at home by myself.

The house is clean, all our clothes are clean, and there is food in the fridge... I plan to tell no-one I am here and just get up in the morning, go for a walk, come back and hang out in my artroom all day. What bliss. Knowing my life, something will probably happen to disturb all this, but that is ok... I have prepared myself... a pessimist is never disappointed.

Today began rather early (at four o'clock) so the day has been a little slow to get going, but I have had a peaceful time drawing funny little apples from a picture in a magazine. I am finding that I am still preoccupied with experimentation in lots of different media and seeing what pleases me and what effects I can achieve. It is pleasing to my tidy mind to cross candidates off the bottom of the list and not bother with them much again: charcoal, chalk pastel and coloured inks have all had three buzzes and left the stage, and the jury is out on oil pastels.

I hope to have some more to show you by the end of the week... if all goes well.

What a lovely way to spend some free time Sue! Your experiments look very promising, and it must be fun to dabble with different mediums!

Sounds like pure bliss, lucky you! I love your experiments too.

The objects are good, and I very much like the fluid watercolour backgrounds. They're not tentative as some watercolour can be. Good luck with your peaceful time!

What an extremely civilised thing to do - wish I'd thought of it! Looking back at your artwork you are really talented. Hope you carry on enjoying your 'holiday' to the full.

Sue, do enjoy this fabulous open hours opportunity!

(Re your critiques, I am also not much a fan of the chalky, dusty media. I know I have some charcoal or pastels around here somewhere, but bet I have not used them since ... the last century.)

Thanks to friends old and new for your comments - I can't reply to you all personally as some of you are 'no-reply' - see above the comments form if you would like to change this and start a conversation!

How lovely to have time to yourself to just do. I love trying the same thing in different mediums but it's so annoying if you have to keep stopping to get lunch or clear up. Have a lovely week.

What a great idea, and I hope you won't get any interruptions! I like your "experiments" - but then I admire your art anyway!

I'm with you on pastels - I gave all mine away to the local U3A art group. they thought Christmas had come early!

Thanks for the glimpse into your sketchbooks. Sketches often say more about the artist than the finished work and they're always the parts of art exhibitions I love the best

I know what does a "holiday at home" mean! I've had it several times, all in summer, and this is MY time, when I can do all the things I love without being in a hurry or overwhelmed by work and home engagements... But an "art holiday" at home sounds much more intriguing and full of promises! I wish you nothing to interrupt your artistic experiments or disturb the peace in the house and in your mind! Have five special and lovely days, Sue!
I like your sketches - I'm sure you've enjoyed drawing them!

What a totally fabulous idea. I wish everyone would go away and leave me to have a garden holiday right here but I suspect it is not going to happen. Never mind, I shall sneak some quiet time anyway. Enjoy your time.

What fun! I am jealous as I sit here chained to a computer at work. You should also experiment on different papers. Water color can be so different on hot or cold press paper, rice paper, cloth. It is wonderful to see the different effects. Enjoy your journey. Can't wait to see the results.

I think the idea of a clean house and all the ironing done is bliss in itself...

Hope you are making the most of your art holiday. No doubt the sun will be beckoning and the garden will take all your time and energy if you let it.

I wonder which medium you will take to in the end?
