she is not dead but sleepeth

Despite the recent lack of posts, I'm still here, taking things slowly, recovering from a cold and spending a few days in beautiful Richmond, Yorkshire, where we had the great pleasure of staying at Millgate House with its beautiful garden.

Although it had only just emerged from several weeks of snow, the garden was a delight, and we were lucky enough to stay in the garden apartment which has its own little door onto the terrace.

Everything in the apartment was understated elegance...

It was a very nurturing place of warm fires, old wooden furniture, linen armchairs, worn stone flags and shelves full of books... even the kitchen drawers were lined with more and more and more books.

Unfortunately the cold virus prevented me from doing much other than drink a lot of soothing tea and work my way through the library. But that was fine.

Now we're back in Manchester I'm spending my time getting to grips with my birthday present, spring cleaning, crocheting (a new project... news of that soon), making time to continue my experiments with drawing and embroidery techniques and cooking delicious things to eat. I always feel that spring arrives with my birthday and so I will hear no more of winter. Green things are unfurling and poking their noses skywards, the birds are singing until nearly 7 o'clock and it's getting lighter every day...

Looks wonderful, so tasteful and snug! You will have to return when you are in full health - glad to hear you are getting better, albeit slowly.

The house looks lovely. Is it a Landmark Trust property?

You stay in the most delightful places. What a treat.
I was toying with the idea of getting an iphone (generous offer from my husband) but they look so complicated and when he phones home I can't hear him on his. Still trying to decide..but yours isn't a phone is it? Its all a bit baffling for me.

Happy birthday, and I hope you feel better soon. These cold viruses seem so much worse when we have survived such a winter, thin; we are over the hill and then, bang. Much love, and take care of yourself.

Sue, I wish you a happy birthday. Thank you for that link to the beautiful house in Richmond. It looks like a place that one would want to visit more than one.

Glad that you are up to some new projects. My apartment-painting continues along, little by little. What has been completed encourages me to think of how great the finished version will be.

Best wishes.

Looks just my kind of place. Hope you are feeling better now. I am suffering from being a bit absent too - can't get my head together somehow, not me at all. I think I need more sun!

Hello

I'm new to the blog and enjoying it! I love Richmond, my parents used to live in Swaledale so I've been lucky enough to visit Yorkshire lots on nostalgic trips.
Hope you are emerging from the cold, they can really linger but I'm sure the spring will help! By the way, your quilt is beautiful and quite awe-inspiring!

I am also born in Spring, so I understand you completely well! I feel even somehow proud that my birthday is in the beginning of this lovely season - the most vivid and beautiful one for me.
The house and its garden look wonderful. There's some kind of mystery in the rooms and furniture... I believe it was a real pleasure to live there for a while, even with a cold.:-)
